EMERALDS & RUBIES &
Your treasure hunt begins with cleaning and evaluating your material. This stuff is right from the mine so it is dirty. Ruby and Sapphire are REALLY dirty. Some say it looks like dirty driveway gravel.
A: You should wash the material in warm soapy water and feel free to use a scrub brush.
B: Next look at the wet stones under a bright light. (Being wet gives the best prospective).
C: What is this grey/black stuff? This is the matrix. It hides stones inside of it. Remove the matrix by chipping it away. Some customers throw all the dry cleaned stones into a rock tumbler to tumble them. The stones hit each other and break loose the matrix material. The Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire are so hard that they won’t wear away.
D: Wash the material again & sort the material for color and clarity. The most valuable Emeralds usually allow light to shine through and are a dark green color. The Valuable Ruby & Sapphire also allows light to shine through and are dark in color. There is also a demand for light colored gems.
E: Tumble your leftover stones in one of our rock tumblers with Perfection polishing grit to make great wire wrap jewelry or drill a hole with a diamond drill for hanging.
